The story behind the design — 1914–1918

Radiology's first field service was built and staffed by women. Between 1914 and 1918 Marie Curie equipped twenty mobile radiography vehicles — the petites Curies — drove them to the front herself, oversaw the construction of 200 radiological rooms at field hospitals behind the lines, and trained 150 women to operate the equipment. More than a million wounded soldiers were examined. There has never been a moment in this specialty's history when women were not running the room.
