The story behind the design — Eberswalde, 1929
Werner Forssmann was a young surgical trainee at a small hospital outside Berlin, and he had been told not to try it. He tried it anyway. He put a cannula into his own antecubital vein, passed a ureteric catheter 65 cm up his arm into his own right heart, and then walked to the X-ray department so the position could be photographed. At the time the self-experiment did his career considerably more harm than good. Twenty-seven years later he shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with André Cournand and Dickinson Richards. Every catheter this specialty owns descends from that walk down the corridor.
