The story behind the design — 1975

Early embolisation used whatever the body would clot around: autologous blood, muscle, gelatin sponge. Effective, but you could not put it exactly where you wanted it and you could not take it back. In 1975 Cesare Gianturco, Joseph Anderson and Sidney Wallace published “Mechanical devices for arterial occlusion” — a stainless-steel coil with wool strands, pushed down a catheter and deployed precisely where the operator chose. Fifty years and a shelf of newer materials later, the coil is still what you reach for when a vessel has to close now and stay closed.
