The story behind the design — 16 January 1964

Laura Shaw was 82, had a tight stenosis of her superficial femoral artery and a foot ulcer that would not heal. The surgeons offered amputation. She refused it. On 16 January 1964 Charles Dotter passed a guidewire across the stenosis and railroaded coaxial catheters over it to dilate the vessel — no incision, no anaesthetic. The ulcer healed. She walked out of hospital and stayed independently mobile for the remaining two and a half years of her life. Seven months earlier, at the Czechoslovak Radiological Congress, Dotter had argued that the angiographic catheter, "used with imagination, it can become an important surgical instrument."
